Sanctuary City – Cities of refuge for people without papers

In the current political situation, with increasingly severe asylum laws and racist hate-speech against refugees, antiracist activists from Canada tell us about their success with the concept of „Sanctuary Cities“. The concept intends, that municipalities commit themselves to protect migrants and people without papers and to provide them with an equal access to municipal services like education or health care. The concept is already implemented in a lot of cities in the United States and Canada.

Nathan Prier an Ayesha Basit from Toronto are co-founders of the „Solidarity City Movement“ that could push through the demand for the establishment a municipal zone of protection in Toronto. We want to discuss with them, if there are similarities to the situation in Germany and Bremen and if we can learn from their experiences.
