Njombe

Njombe

Njombe is the coldest city in Tanzania, is above 2000 meters and apart of a sunny morning the rain is continously falling down (it seems to be back in Göttingen). The city is small (~60'000 inhabitants) and spread over a large area. There are many nice spots where one can see the valley below.
people

It was more pleasant to walk around the city because nobody stopped us trying to sell us stuff. I could profit of having a conversation with a couple of people and understand better the society. Now the knowledge of Swahili is becoming crucial but it is really hard to improve, everybody is helping me but it does not make it that easier. Young guys going at the secondary school have a excelent level of english but the most of the people unlikely speak english.
prejudices

Speaking with them I've realized a lot of prejudices about people, both ways. I got the impression that the people think we are rich because of a gift and because of that we should be generous with them. We think they are poor because they don't work hard enough or because their work is not structured enough. I don't know what is the truth, I want to think more about these thoughts during my stay.
life

People here seem more calm, life is less expensive and the most important activities are connected with agriculture. In the city center there are hundrets of small shops, selling the same stuff more or less is this sequence: clothes, hardware, elctronics, beverage, motobikes, clothes, hardware... The vegetables and fruit market is on another side of the city, where many kinds of vegetables (0km) where stored on the stands. Some times I really think to be back to northern europe.
