About Agrio Gata Kitchen
Our kitchen is both a social and a political tool that continue the work of the Volunteers at the borders directly into the city of Thessaloniki.
Where the financial support from the Greek government and wages are too low, where the help for the Fugees is not enough to provide basic needs and dignity, we want to offer a place of equality and respect. Whenever you want, you can pick-up for free the best of our recycling. As we also collaborate with local collectives (such as room 39), we hope to enlarge this network already alive in Thessaloniki and extend it to the more isolated groups and individuals we meet around.
Everyday, everyone who wants and needs to cook is welcome and each thursday we have an open dinner. This a particular moment where you can meet people from all over the world and we hope to invit more families to use the kitchen when they don’t have the chance to have one.
As we are self-managed community, everyone learn how to use this place and its storage and we believe in this idea that kitchen always have been a place for gathering and exchange knowledge and creativity.
The political side of our Kitchen comes from the way we get our food.
Almost 12% of the Humankind is under nutrition or starving and more than 240 000 tons of food are throw everyday in the european garbages. This is no sense.
By creating a network of collecting/redistributing/cooking the wasted food, we blow the whistle on this capitalistic system which from its greatness is not able to provide the basic needs for its own citizen. By cooking the trash into delicious meal, we also turn into fun something that can be ashaming for the people reduce to look into the garbages to survive.
