Scary New British Report on Climate Change

[Treehugger]

A new report on the impact of climate change even has Tony Blair saying "it is now plain that the emission of greenhouse gases... is causing global warming at a rate that is unsustainable." The Environment Secretary says "The thing that is perhaps not so familiar to members of the public... is this notion that we could come to a tipping point where change could be irreversible." The report says there may be "potentially large numbers of extinctions" and "major increases in hunger and water shortage risks... particularly in developing countries". The report concludes that thngs can be done, that technologies do exist to lower emmssions and that costs are coming down, however, "The biggest problem does not seem to be the technologies or the costs, but overcoming the many political, social and behavioural barriers to implementing mitigation options" - BBC

CRITICAL MASS ENDS IN ARRESTS

[Chicago Indymedia]

... A crowd of several hundred cyclists had gathered to lock a 'ghost bike' to a bike rack at the spot where a cyclist was killed by a drunk driver on January 4th. The group of bikers was so large as to spill into the street, blocking most of the lanes. Just as the bike had been installed, police began threatening to arrest people. A chant of "Whose Streets? Our Streets!" erupted...

Liberating the bike lanes, one car at a time.

Share the space, please

A bike lane's perogative in traffic flow and safety is stated in several sections of the NYC Traffic Code. Taken together, they state that a vehicle can not park, stand, or otherwise block a bicycle lane. Admittedly, many people don't know about the right of bicyclists to fairly share the road, and city government has been remarkably apathetic to supporting public education on this. That is where the clowns come in...

Sound Art Dispatch: Bicycle Rhapsody

[Indymedia Audio]

attached is an mp3 file entitled: "Bicycle Rhapsody" background: In Tokyo, my primary means of transportation is bicycle, thanks for sending me a field recording of a bicycle in constant displacement (somewhere in Italy, i guess). Riding a bicylce can be a metaphor to a cosmic journey, so i attached an ambient synthesizer audio with a deconstructed bass line to compliment with the beat of pedaling. In this audio collage, you observe an automated computer voice speaking in Japanese. I attached this audio to emphasize the contrast between machine and manual technology. But i preserved the distance and measurement which the bicycle has travelled, instead of reducing it as a mere sound sample. Putting together non-related audios from somewhere between time and space, creates a new totality where it empregnates unthinkable meanings.

Il metano che viene dalle piante

[Blogeko.info]

Milano come Amsterdam

Domenica 15 gennaio 2006 ore 17

Libreria Archivi del Novecento (ex Tikkun)

Via Montevideo - Milano

Buon divertimento.

bicicletta verso casa, accompagnato da un assistente.

... "Everything in my field of vision wavered and was distorted as if seen in a curved mirror," says the chemist, who celebrates his 100th birthday tomorrow. "I had the feeling that I could not move from the spot. I was cycling, cycling, but the time seemed to stand still."...

"LSD brings about a reduction of intellectual powers in favour of an emotional experiencing of the world. It can help to refill our consciousness with this feeling of wholeness and being one with nature."

transmediale.06 - REALITY ADDICTS

festival for art and digital culture berlin

Berlin, February 3 - 7, 2006

Akademie der Kuenste

Berlin, Hanseatenweg 10

Conference

The transmediale.06 conference runs under the title 'Reality Addicts' and deals with artistic and social ideas that don't stop at the borders of mediatised reality. 'Reality Addicts' does not approach the relationship of media and reality from the perspective of technologies that impose specific perceptions or constructions of reality. Rather, within five panels and four lectures the conference explores ways in which these constructions can be subverted, exaggerated or reduced to absurdity. 'Reality Addiction' is a positive, affirmative attitude towards reality, faithful to the power of humour as a form of critique and social practice. Being addicted to reality means to long ever-more for it, always contradictory to and inconsistent with what we already know. The conference offers a reality-check of the present, taken from artistic, cultural and socially committed perspectives.

Bike Winter - The Velorution will be Winterized!

http://www.bikewinter.org/images/covbike.jpg

The idea is very simple - with the proper gear and a little determination, you can continue to enjoy bicycling year round. Add in the comraderie of hundreds of riders and dozens of exciting events and you've got Bike Winter!

Bike Winter was born out of a desire to keep bikes out of the basement during our six months of winter. If you've ever thought about how nice it would be to drive less (or even be car-free), you can learn how to make your bicycle an all weather, all occasion transportation tool. A bike in motion tends to stay in motion, a bike in a basement tends to stay in the basement. . .even on the "nice" days.

L'aria è nostra

[Blog di Beppe Grillo]

http://www.beppegrillo.it/immagini/traffico.jpg

Riprendiamoci l'aria.

http://patentpending.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/capture0706200511644_pm.jpg

Hub gears have been providing reliable service to cyclists since the original 3 speed model was invented and first produced by Sturmey-Archer in 1901. It became the standard for quality bikes, until the derailleur systems became more reliable in the 1950s.

Hub gears have become an increasingly popular choice again for city cyclists and commuters...
