Planktum is like a researh project that looks for those software instruments that could help develop (via appropiation) the potentialities of the different communities of immigrants in Europe, in the U.S, elsewhere. It is not a unique or original idea, it inherits from the long line of Live-CD's production that aims to make the computer an easier dispositve to be used by not-computer-versed people. From Dyneolic's idea of net.radio for all! to USB pen-drive portable linux distros, localized knoppix versions or recently the Gollum project that was integrated in the al-jwaritzmi liveCD. The instructions on howto remaster a live-cd are all around, and there are plenty of LUG's in latin america making them, but Planktum is a social project for the exiled and nomads that living in a different continent wish to communicte with their families using their internet connection to avoid paying extra to the telephone company.
We are clear in that Planktum is basically a trimmed liveCD, it's not and will not be a technical show-off, for version 01 it comes out based on SLAX, but it could be whatever already developed liveCD distro that allows our customization (instead of a full fledge packaged one, we will try to think on a "slimmed" spanish one) that simplifies at most the boot process and that includes a friendly GUI following some aesthetics close to the visual culture of the target group of users to whom it is addressed. be it africans, latinos, chinese, etc. We imagine a graphical interface that receives him/her in an enviroment with at most 4 basic icons on the desktop leading to communication applications (nowadays it includes Skype, WebBrowser, Email Client and Instant Messaging Systems. Planktum could be a build from a ranging pool of FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software): jabber to gollum or gnome metting to (pidip)a puredata based patch, all acording to the pool of resources that is out there in the opensource world.
As we very well know the world distribution of this CD-ROM is the main problem, and perhaps this is exactly the place where we consider ourselves to be strong since theres already a group of people and projects in different places of the world that are interested in promoting this dispositive via their magazines, websites, stores community houses, etc. Some of the copies will be handed (in)formally on those long distance call-center shops where immigrants gather daily everywhere around the planet. Yes! you have seen them :)
