After the JRE has been successfully installed extract the Chet folder from this zip file to any location in your filesystem. Navigate to the newly extracted Chet folder and run Chet.jar. If Chet does not run you may need to mark it as executable. Open a terminal and type:
chmod +x<space>
Replace <space> with a space and drag Chet.jar into the terminal and then press enter. Now run Chet.jar.
LINUX:
Move the downloaded JRE .tar.gz file to the location in which you'd like to have it installed, such as your home folder. Open a terminal and type:
tar zxvf jre-<version>-linux-i586.tar.gz
In the above replace <version> with the version of the JRE that you downloaded, for instance if you downloaded jre-8u31-linux-i586.tar.gz then you'll replace <version> with 8u31. Still in the terminal type:
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /path/to/jre/bin/java 0
Replace /path/to/jre with the folder path where the downloaded jre tar.gz was saved. Such as /home/username/jre1.8.0_31
Extract the contents of this zip file to any location in your file system. You may need to mark Chet.jar as executable. To do so, still in the terminal, navigate to the folder where Chet.jar is located and type the following:
sudo chmod ugo+x Chet.jar
You can now run Chet from a terminal by navigating to the folder where Chet.jar is located and typing:
java -jar Chet.jar
If you'd like to be able to open Chet by double clicking it you'll need to add the Runtime Environment to your list of available applications with the following steps, tested on Ubuntu 12.04. First open a terminal and type:
sudo gedit
This will bring up a GEdit text editor window. Create a new document and enter the following:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Sun Java Runtime Environment
Comment=Java Runtime Environment <version>
Exec=cautious-launcher %f /path/to/runtimeEnvironment/bin/java -jar
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Icon=/path/to/runtimeEnvironment/plugin/desktop/sun_java.png
MimeType=application/x-java-archive;appliation/java-archive;application/x-jar;
NoDisplay=true
In the above text next to replace /path/to/runtimeEnvironment/ with the file path where you installed the Java Runtime Environment. Replace <version> with the version of the JRE you downloaded, for instance if you downloaded jre-8u31-linux-i586.tar.gz then you will replace <version> with 8u31 and your path may look like /home/username/jre1.8.0_31. Save that to /usr/share/applications/sun-java.desktop. Right click on Chet.jar, choose "Open With" and select Sun Java Runtime Environment from the list of available applications.
You may also make it so that you can double click Chet.jar from the file browser to run it. Right click Chet.jar and select properties, from this new menu select "Open With," find Sun Java Runtime Environment in the list, select it and click "Set as Default."
